Ontex and Semtech Collaborate on IoT-Enabled Layer Label – Nonwovens Industry Magazine

Semtech Corporation, a global provider of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms, announced a collaboration with Ontex, a leading international personal hygiene group, for a diaper label compatible with the Internet of Things (IoT). Ontex developed and owns the concept of smart layers and worked with Belgian medical device agency Zenso Electronics to seamlessly integrate Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN standard to alert caregivers via an app when protection needs to be worn. be changed. The solution includes a printed sensor, a transmitter (clipped on the diaper) and a mobile or web application, which can accurately determine the saturation level of the diaper. LoRaWAN connectivity offers a small form factor design and ultra-low power consumption, ideal for this type of solution in a smart hospital or senior care facility.

“Improving patient quality of life was a key goal in the development of the Orizon smart diaper tag and the reason we chose to use LoRaWAN for the solution,” says Annick De Poorter, vice- Executive President, Innovation and Sustainability at Ontex. “Caregivers and patients need the flexibility to move over distances over which LoRaWAN has been able to provide secure coverage. As a result, the patient experience is immediately improved.

According to Statista, the global smart hospital market in 2026 is expected to reach a value of US$84 billion, with ambulatory vigilance playing a key role in this growth. As hospitals and aged care facilities face enormous time and budget constraints to care for residents, the value of low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), such as a LoRaWAN, is extremely useful to immediately identify any incident requiring follow-up action. . The Orizon diaper tag intelligently uses LoRaWAN to provide instant real-time saturation data so the caregiver can change the diaper as needed.

“The Orizon Smart Layer Tag is a great example of how LoRaWAN is making the world a better and smarter place to live through improving the patient experience. Health and safety should never be overlooked and this joint solution underscores just how valuable IoT is in enhancing the future of smart hospitals,” says Marc Pegulu, VP of Marketing and IoT Product Strategy for Semtech’s wireless and sensing product group.
